WASHINGTON COUNTY, Va. (WJHL) — A man lost his life after reportedly shooting at deputies, who then returned fire, in Washington County, Virginia early on Monday.

As detailed in a news release from the Washington County, Virginia Sheriff’s Office (WCSO), deputies were dispatched to a residence in the Evergreen Hills subdivision of Bristol, Virginia following an alarm notification.

Deputies were called around 12:52 a.m. and arrived to find an armed man inside of the home, the WCSO reports.

“The subject fired at deputies, and deputies returned fire, fatally striking the individual,” the WCSO stated.

The owners of the home were not present when the officer-involved shooting took place, and no deputies were injured.

The sheriff’s office stated there was no ongoing threat to the community.

The WCSO noted that the Virginia State Police and the Washington County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office are collaborating in the investigation into the incident, and further information will be provided as it becomes available.
