Newcastle United’s prolonged quest for a domestic trophy came to an end last season when they claimed the Carabao Cup – a moment the club commemorated with a unique exhibition that chronicled their victorious journey.

‘The Road to Wembley’, presented at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in partnership with VERSUS, provided fans with an immersive, documentary-style depiction of the Magpies’ triumph.

The exhibition showcased over 100 photographs taken by club photographers Serena Taylor, Harriet Massey, and Michelle Mercer, each capturing intimate scenes from the winning campaign. Attendees also enjoyed cinematic displays, installations by the fan group Wor Flags, and the rare opportunity to stand beside the Carabao Cup trophy itself.

During the launch event, there was a panel discussion featuring curators Ewen Spencer and Jimmy Turrell, along with Newcastle legend Rob Lee, followed by an evening DJ set.

The centrepiece of the story, of course, was Newcastle’s 2-1 victory over Liverpool in the final – sealed by Alexander Isak’s decisive strike.

With a noticeable interest in joining Liverpool, the exhibition may have inadvertently served as a farewell tour for the Swede – a reminder that even if heroes move on, the memories (and the trophy) endure.
