The Rhode Island assistant attorney general, who gained public attention after a video of her arrest circulated online, has been given her consequence for the incident. Devon Flanagan, 34, was detained for willful trespassing at the Clarke Cooke House restaurant in Newport, Rhode Island on August 14 and has since been suspended for six months without pay.
“On August 14, Special Assistant Attorney General Devon Flanagan treated the Newport Police Department poorly and embarrassed herself, the Office, and me personally,” Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha stated, as reported by the Boston Globe. “We expect our attorneys to uphold the highest personal and professional standards, and Ms. Flanagan clearly did not reach those expectations on this occasion.”
Body-camera footage captures the arrest of Rhode Island prosecutor, Devon Flanagan, who loudly informed officers, “I’m an AG! I’m an AG!” in an attempt to avoid the situation she was in.
Flanagan was arraigned on Wednesday, where she entered a no contest plea, according to Boston.com. She has been given a six-month filing, meaning that after this period, the case may be dismissed.
Her attorney, Kevin Hagan, declined to comment.
Neronha also clarified that Flanagan’s assertion that police must turn off their cameras at the direction of citizens is false.
“She’s embarrassed herself,” Neronha previously told WPRO. “Regardless of the future of her employment with us, she’s going to have a significant journey to recover from this. It’s truly regrettable.”
“I’ve got 110 lawyers. She embarrassed all of them. I haven’t had many issues like this while I’ve been attorney general,” he said.
Neronha’s office did not return a comment request.
