Driver charged with DUI after vehicle vs. bike collision in St. Joseph

Motorist faces DUI charge following car and bicycle crash in St. Joseph

A 72-year-old woman was injured last week in St. Joseph after being involved in an accident between a vehicle and her bicycle. The man responsible for the crash is now being charged with a DUI.

The incident took place on August 21 at the East Grand Street and Sherwood Drive intersection. Champaign County Sheriff Dustin Heuerman reported that deputies responded to the scene at 7:40 p.m.

“The accident involved a 2005 GMC Yukon, driven by 61-year-old Stanley Duitsman from Ogden, who hit the bicyclist as he was turning from a stop sign,” stated Heuerman. “The 72-year-old woman from St. Joseph was taken to a local hospital for minor injuries, which may include a broken ankle.”

As a result of the investigation, Duitsman was arrested and charged with four different offenses by the Champaign County State’s Attorney’s Office:

  • Aggravated driving under the influence
  • Operating an uninsured motor vehicle
  • Failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident
  • Illegal possession or transportation of alcohol by a driver

Court records show Duitsman was arraigned on those charges the day after the crash. He entered a plea of not guilty and requested a trial by jury.

He is due back in court on Sept. 30 for a pretrial conference.
