1 dead after planes collide midair near Colorado Airport

DENVER (KDVR) — According to a statement from the National Transportation Safety Board to FOX31, two aircraft collided in midair while approaching the Fort Morgan Municipal Airport on Sunday afternoon.

Around 12:10 p.m., a Cessna 172 and an Extra Flugzeugbau EA300 were in the process of landing at the airport when they crashed into each other, as reported by the Federal Aviation Administration. Each aircraft had two people on board.

Responding to the crash, the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office reported that both planes caught fire. The sheriff’s office indicated that there were injuries, though the extent was initially unclear.

Later updates from the office confirmed that the occupants of the Cessna suffered minor injuries, while one individual from the EA300 was hospitalized and the other was declared dead at the site.

NTSB will lead the investigation and said that investigators are expected to arrive at the scene of the crash on Monday afternoon.

A preliminary report is expected to be released in about one month, which will detail the probable cause of the crash and any other contributing factors.

The administration asks that anyone who witnessed the crash, may have information or surveillance video, contact them at witness@ntsb.gov.
