Nestlé dismisses CEO after an investigation into a relationship with a subordinate

On Monday, Swiss multinational Nestlé announced that CEO Laurent Freixe had been terminated following an investigation concerning an unreported romantic relationship with a subordinate.

Nestlé, renowned for its products like Nescafé and Purina, issued a statement confirming the immediate dismissal. The inquiry revealed that Freixe’s relationship breached the company’s code of conduct.

Freixe, who had been CEO for a year, will be replaced by Philipp Navratil, a longtime Nestlé executive.

“This was a necessary decision,” said Chairman Paul Bulcke. “Nestlé’s values and governance are strong foundations of our company.”

The company didn’t give any other details about the investigation.

Freixe had a long tenure with Nestlé, starting in 1986 and holding various global positions. Following a restructuring in January 2022, he became the CEO of Zone Latin America. In August 2024, he was appointed as CEO, succeeding Mark Schneider, and assumed the position on September 1, 2024.

Similarly, Navratil began his Nestlé career in 2001 as an internal auditor, later holding multiple roles throughout Central America. By 2020, he was part of the Coffee Strategic Business Unit, ascending to CEO of the Nespresso division in 2024.

This event is among several recent leadership shifts at Nestlé. In June, Bulcke, a former CEO and current chairman since 2017, announced he would not seek reelection for 2026. Moreover, in April, Steve Presley, executive vice president and CEO of Zone Americas, declared his retirement after nearly three decades with the company.

Nestlé, headquartered in Vevey, Switzerland, is navigating through challenges similar to other food producers, such as increasing commodity prices and tariff repercussions. However, in July, it stated it had managed to counteract rising coffee and cocoa expenses by elevating prices.
