LOS ANGELES — Cameron Mathison of “General Hospital” has been a working actor for decades.

The year 2025 began with difficulties for him. Tragically, he experienced the loss of his home due to the Eaton Fire in Southern California. Despite this setback, he found solace in his work, with the show “General Hospital” offering his character Drew a compelling storyline to immerse himself in.

“It’s been months and months and months in the making. They had to make Drew really despicable!” laughed Mathison.

“General Hospital” presents a gripping cliffhanger, as Mathison’s character, Drew Cain, suffers a gunshot wound. This leads to an intense “who done it?” narrative that will unfold over several weeks. The intrigue harks back to the famous 1980s series, “Dallas.”

“Who shot Drew?” Mathison asked.

He commented on the general disdain for his character, noting, “He’s disliked in Port Charles, and probably across America. Many people would be glad to see him gone, and there’s justification for that sentiment.”

From Carly, to Sonny, to Michael, to Curtis, to Portia, to Nina… the list goes on!

Mathison remarked on the abundance of suspects involved, likening it to a major plot twist. “It’s very reminiscent of the ‘who shot J.R.’ scenario from the past. I love being in the thick of it, it’s incredibly enjoyable for me.”

Mathison admitted that, at first, he wasn’t sure about his character becoming such a villain.

Initially, Mathison was hesitant about the change. “I didn’t fully grasp the transition at first,” he admitted. “I think that confusion was shared by a lot of us. But as I received more scripts, I was surprised by the direction it was taking. It was quite overwhelming.”

When asked if he preferred returning to his previous role as the protagonist, Mathison pondered before responding, “I actually enjoy it this way! Throughout my 30-year career, I’ve been blessed with diverse opportunities.”

“I’ve never played a character this dark and this twisted and this much of a jerk ever, and it’s a real opportunity for me, so I’m really trying to embrace it.”

“General Hospital” airs in the afternoons on ABC.
