TULSA, Okla. (KFOR) A 13-year-old Tulsa boy died on Labor Day following a fireworks incident at an apartment complex.

The Tulsa Police Department reported that officers were called to the Sandy Park Apartments at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Monday following reports of a fireworks explosion and a child experiencing cardiac arrest. Upon arrival, officers found Tulsa Fire Department firefighters administering lifesaving procedures on the 13-year-old boy.

He was taken to a local hospital, where he died, officials said.

Eyewitnesses described seeing a group of young boys setting off fireworks earlier in the evening. They mentioned that the noise grew increasingly louder and then witnessed a small grass fire on the southern side of the complex, where a young child was found lying on the ground.

Those witnesses were able to pull the child away from the fire before calling 911.

According to police, an individual with the 13-year-old boy stated they were using mortar-style fireworks. The teen had been holding the firework tube, with the mortar pointing towards his head, when it unexpectedly detonated.
