CHARLESTON, Ill. (WCIA) – Eastern Illinois football is seeking its first 2-0 start since 2013.

The Panthers beat Dayton in week one and now hit the road to take on Indiana State.

Quarterback Cole LaCrue, a redshirt sophomore who transferred from Wisconsin, set a new record for the Panthers’ program with his rushing performance, achieving 193 yards in a game against the Flyers.

“If you had told me before the game that he would have 26 rushing plays – particularly the number of runs he executed between the tackles – it wouldn’t have been the target we aimed for,” stated Chris Wilkerson, the head football coach at Eastern Illinois.

The Panthers are aiming to find balance in their gameplay. While LaCrue is keen on utilizing his ability to run, he is also aware of the importance of maintaining his health throughout the season.

“I aim to gain as many yards as possible, but it’s crucial for me to stay safe and protected to last the entire season,” remarked LaCrue. “This week, we’ll adopt a more cautious approach. However, I’ll continue to play in the style I need to.”

Wilkerson commented, “Some plays are unplanned, and he opts to run during a planned pass play. At times, it’s about making the most of what the defense allows. He’s a fiercely competitive individual with true grit, and I have no doubt about his toughness.”

LaCrue credited the Panthers’ defense, which kept them in the game when the offense failed to score in the first half in week one.

The EIU QB is excited about the opportunity to go on the road.

“You kind of adopt the role of the antagonist,” LaCrue noted. “You get the chance to defy expectations and irritate others. I enjoy that mindset and relish in provoking reactions.”

Eastern Illinois vs Indiana State is set for a 12:00 p.m. game on Saturday, Sept. 6. The game will air on ESPN+.
