URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — Part of downtown Urbana is currently under boil orders as a result of water main breaks.

The American Water Customer Advisory Map indicates that the impacted downtown area is divided into two distinct sections that are in close proximity to one another. The larger section encompasses Lake Street between Park Street and University Avenue, University spanning from Central Avenue to Crystal Lake Drive, and Race Street from University up to the railway tracks north of Griggs Street.

American Water crews started making emergency repairs to the main break at 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, which is when the boil order went into effect.

Residents in the zone of this boil notice might encounter a temporary disruption in service or reduced water pressure. Initially, repairs were anticipated to require approximately four to six hours, but by around 3:45 p.m. on Friday, the boil order remained active.

This affected area hosts several establishments such as Culver’s, Windy City Express, Wood N’ Hog BBQ, Silvercreek, and Chase Bank. A Culver’s employee informed WCIA that the restaurant has remained open during the boil notice since they can still serve patrons with bottled water and canned sodas.

The smaller boil notice is effective along University Avenue from McCullough Street to Central Avenue. This alert was triggered by a water main break, with residents being first informed at 10:33 a.m. on Friday. One of the businesses impacted by this notice is Dunkin’ Donuts.

This boil order is expected to last until approximately 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Residents in both affected regions are advised to boil water intended for drinking or cooking for five minutes to ensure safety. However, the water remains safe for bathing, washing, and other routine activities.
