Remote-control airplane club taking off in Champaign

Champaign’s Remote-Control Airplane Club Set to Launch

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — A Champaign County aviation club is bringing together remote-control pilots from across the Midwest this weekend.

The Barnstormers over Champaign will host their annual fun fly event on Saturday and Sunday. During this event, radio-controlled planes are capable of reaching speeds of up to 200 miles per hour.

Club member Dan Irwin said it’s all about bringing people with a love for flying together and passing on that joy to the next generation.

His joy for flying showed during his interview — when a plane started soaring overhead.

“I have a deep passion for airplanes—wow, look at all those biplanes in the sky! PT 17s. My love for it is immense, and the camaraderie and friendship among the members just add to it. We have an amazing group of people in this club,” said Irwin.

Planes will be lifting off Sunday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. The club also offers free flying lessons during the week for anyone who is interested.
