(KTLA) A Southern California man expressed pride upon discovering that his unbreakable glass product thwarted a group of smash-and-grab thieves at a jewelry store in Sherman Oaks, California.

On Sept. 3,  the suspects ran into Kristof’s Jewelers at Westfield Fashion Square mall while carrying large hammers. 

The robbers attempted to smash the glass display cases, causing loud noises that sent terrified shoppers scrambling for safety. Despite their efforts, the glass remained intact, forcing the criminals to abandon their mission and flee.

The store’s owner said that while their display cases received some damage, no jewelry or merchandise was taken.

Ray Tissan, the owner of RT Unbreakable Glass, was motivated to market his polycarbonate unbreakable glass after experiencing burglaries as a business owner.

“There were a lot of break-ins back then, at liquor stores and small shops, especially,” he told local affiliate KTLA.

Although polycarbonate material has been available for a while, Tissan noted that by tailoring the sheets to suit specific client needs, he could offer a product suitable for a variety of stores and industries.

After advertising his product on social media, Tissan said he began to receive an influx of calls and orders.

This unbreakable material is now being widely adopted in stores throughout Southern California, with many choosing to install it on their doors, windows, and even walls and ceilings.

Tissan expressed great pride in his product’s role in safeguarding businesses, especially amid a surge in retail thefts across the Southland.

“It makes me feel so good,” Tissan said of the response he’s received.
