Iconic athletes Carl Lewis, Jerry Rice and Nadia Comăneci reveal how they stay strong as they age

Inspired by the popular series “Limitless: Live Better Now” featuring Chris Hemsworth, National Geographic reached out to renowned athletes to share the fitness and wellness practices they’ve discovered as they’ve aged.

Back in 1976, a young 14-year-old Nadia Comăneci made history as the first Olympic gymnast to achieve a perfect score of 10, and she repeated this remarkable feat six more times during her career. Today, at 63, she has developed a fitness routine tailored to her current lifestyle.

“Life is experienced in stages. As a teenager or young adult, you’re occupied with various activities, often not concerned with aging. Yet, once you retire and face everyday life, the realization hits that stopping movement quickly leads to decline,” she shared with National Geographic. “I incorporate about 10-15 minutes of cycling, 10 minutes on the elliptical, followed by stretching and light weights, completing my routine in 40 minutes.”

Jerry Rice, holding the NFL records for catches, receiving yards, and touchdowns, continues a disciplined fitness schedule even at 62. The three-time Super Bowl victor also appreciates the perks of being a dog owner.

“I engage in regular Peloton workouts, alongside CrossFit. Plus, my large South African mastiff enjoys running, so we often exercise together. Admittedly, my knee swells at times, and there’s stiffness upon waking. However, perseverance through discomfort is essential, as maintaining flexibility and activity as you age is the ultimate goal. My mantra is: Challenge yourself daily, and the rewards will come,” he explained.

Legendary sprinter Carl Lewis admits that even with all his athletic prowess, he’s just like us.

“What I’ve learned about my body is it ages like everyone else,” he said.

At age 64, Lewis said he gets fulfillment from doing something each year that he never thought he’d do.

“For me, having a challenge is crucial. That’s a message I pass on to my kids too—don’t just pursue challenges, but own them. Staying active and healthy requires motivation and purpose each day.”
