GIBSON CITY, Ill. (WCIA) — The last decade of Falcon football has seen many talented running backs lead the way.

In the legacy of this esteemed program, figures like Mitch McNutt, Jared Trantina, and Aidan Laughery have made significant contributions. Now, it’s Jacob Chase who is set to carry forward that legacy.

“It’s truly motivating to see those past players and the incredible talent we’ve had, and to now be the starting running back where they once played. It’s quite inspirational,” Chase shared.

Chase had a front row seat for Laughery’s success in Gibson City, taking after the Illini junior’s ability to make game-changing plays.

“His speed has always been a standout trait, ever since his early days on the field up to now. Watching him excel through the years has inspired me to focus on enhancing my speed,” Chase remarked.

Already gaining recognition, this first-team all-conference running back rushed for more than 1,500 yards and scored 21 touchdowns last season, gearing up for another impressive performance.

“Hard work for my entire career, and I’m proud of the work, and I’m hoping it pays off,” Chase said.

“We’ve limited his carries in the first two games to keep him fresh, but as we approach the core part of the season, his carries will definitely increase,” explained head coach Chad Augspurger.

Player-led self-improvement has played a big part in the Falcons’ proficient rushing production.

“They didn’t need much prodding to hit the weight room or put in extra effort; they did it independently,” Augspurger noted. “They have a strong drive and a clear focus on their goals.”

GCMS hoping Chase and the ground game continue to shine against Leroy in our Friday Football Fever Spotlight Game of the Week.
