‘God have mercy on us’: Sudan’s Christians struggle to survive under siege

Reports suggest that RSF militants have coerced Christians to convert to Islam in return for safety and aid. It’s crucial to recognize that the RSF is the modern version of the Janjaweed militias, notoriously known for ethnic cleansing in Darfur about twenty years ago. This terrifying legacy is being repeated today.

“Together, these abuses have left Christians among the war’s most vulnerable victims,” Wahba concluded.

This week, a church leader in Sudan expressed to Fox News Digital that conditions are particularly dire for Christians in El Fasher, a city under RSF control. “They have been surviving on animal feed and grass for a long time. There’s no access to wheat, rice, or any essentials. Tragically, even medicines are unavailable — something as simple as the flu could be fatal. We feel helpless and continuously seek God’s mercy.”

A spokesperson from the State Department informed Fox News Digital, “Since the conflict erupted in Sudan in April 2023, there has been a significant regression in the country’s adherence to basic freedoms, including the freedom of religion. This regression gravely affects Sudan’s marginalized ethnic and religious groups, particularly Christians.”

The spokesperson further stated, “Sudan was previously a Country of Particular Concern during Bashir’s regime, and the U.S. is dedicated to preventing the resurgence of Bashir-era supporters and other violent extremists who might enforce severe breaches of religious freedom.”

“To protect U.S. interests, including religious freedom in Sudan, our efforts aim to minimize adverse Islamist influence in Sudanese governance and restrain Iran’s regional involvement, which has led to destabilization, conflicts, and civilian suffering.”

Currently, Sudan is in a state of desperation. The church leader mentioned, “Christians face restrictions; even group prayers at home are banned in numerous areas. The logical outlook seems bleak as Sudan becomes more radical. Yet, I have faith in God who can transform curses into blessings. We hope and pray for the church to remain a beacon of hope and guidance in our nation.”
