Trump invokes Churchill and ‘special relationship’ as questions over UK free speech grow

On Wednesday evening, President Donald Trump delivered a toast before the state dinner with King Charles III at Windsor Castle, emphasizing the “special relationship” between the U.S. and U.K.

Referring to King Charles’ speech, Trump remarked on the bond described by Sir Winston Churchill—whose bust resides in the Oval Office—coining the term ‘special relationship.’ Trump commented that from an American perspective, ‘special’ doesn’t fully capture its depth. He highlighted that both nations are connected through history, fate, love, language, and deep cultural, traditional, ancestral, and destined ties.

He praised the British Empire for establishing the foundations of law, liberty, free speech, and individual rights in all regions once under the Union Jack, including America. This statement may stir some controversy as the U.K. government faces critiques over free speech issues.

The debates over U.K. online safety laws have sparked significant political conversations, not only within Britain but also among prominent American leaders such as Vice President JD Vance, who was not present at Wednesday’s state visit.

Other free speech criticisms have arisen in the U.K. relating to abortion laws, online comments and what some, like right-wing Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, have called an “authoritarian” crackdown akin to laws seen in places like North Korea.
