Montauk Cowboys: The oldest ranch in America is far from the Old West

MONTAUK, New York — Montauk is known for a lot of things like restaurants, boutiques, nightlife, and of course the beach.

Deep Hollow Ranch is something different, all right.

“It’s been called the birthplace of the American cowboy,” said Patrick Keogh, ranch purveyor.

“This ranch is the oldest in the United States, founded in 1658. Today, it offers a perfect escape where families can enjoy horseback riding together,” explained Cate Keogh, who runs the ranch.

Cate and Patrick are the keepers of this perfect slice of paradise, or as they put it, “We run the ranch.”

They’re underselling.

Deep Hollow Ranch is made up of thousands of acres of sprawling hills and untouched pristine Montauk coastline.

Keeping it afloat is no easy feat.

“My wife and I actually met here, tied the knot here, and we’ve even built a third home. Our children have grown up surrounded by the ranch’s beauty,” shared Patrick. “It’s our passion.”

A passion worth pursuing.

The ranch offers horse rides for all ages, and pony rides for younger children.

Think of it as a breath of fresh air step away from city life and into nature.

“Riding is invigorating,” Cate added. “No matter how tough your day has been, once you’re on a horse, all your troubles seem to fade away.”

You can see clear out to the ocean from the trail.

“We genuinely enjoy welcoming new guests who are enthusiastic about our offerings,” Patrick mentioned. “Seeing children experience horse riding is rewarding. There aren’t many places left where you can do this, especially riding along the beach, which is truly special.”

And you just to see the kids and just enjoying their lives and getting out here and seeing something we never get to see.”

At Deep Hollow Ranch, it all boils down to a word Patrick mentioned earlier: passion.

The Keoghs love what they do.

It’s a labor of love, and for the people interested, they love sharing.

“Why is it worth all the work to you?” Beckstrom asked.

“Home,” Patrick said. “And the horses.”
