York County shooting: Autopsies to be done Friday on Pennsylvania police officers killed in the line of duty

Autopsies are anticipated to be conducted on Friday for the trio of York County police officers who tragically lost their lives in an ambush on Wednesday in North Codorus Township, Pennsylvania.

Around the time they approached the entryway of his ex-girlfriend’s residence, Matthew James Ruth, aged 24, allegedly used an AR-style rifle to fatally shoot Detective Mark Baker, Detective Sgt. Cody Becker, and Detective Isaiah Emenheiser, where he was reportedly in hiding.

The officers were there, searching for Ruth, to arrest him on suspicion of stalking.

Two other officers were critically wounded in the shootout with the gunman and remain hospitalized in critical condition.

The suspect was killed by police.

The deaths of Becker, Baker, and Emenheiser, all part of the Northern York County Regional Police Department, have left deep sorrow in the law enforcement community and beyond as they died while on duty.

“Each of these men represented the best of policing,” said Chief Dave Lash.

The officer killings in Central Pennsylvania have stunned the nation.

The community gathered for a vigil for the officers on Thursday night.

People packed a church in Spring Grove, Pennsylvania, to pay their respects, pray for the wounded and honor the lives lost.

Outside the Northern York County Regional Police Department, a memorial continues to grow.

Supporters have left dozens of bouquets of flowers and flags.

Emenheiser enjoyed fitness and had two children.

Baker worked with Philadelphia Police Department in the early 2000s.

One of the three officers killed in a deadly ambush in York, Pennsylvania, was a former member of the Philadelphia Police Department.

Detective Becker’s alma mater shared a tribute, with his former wrestling coach mentioning to 6abc that he was an exceptional leader and athlete. Detective Baker, who made a visit to a school in York County in 2021, previously worked with the Philadelphia Police Department from 2001 until 2004, initially starting in the 25th District and progressing to the highway patrol unit.

Roosevelt Poplar from Philadelphia FOP remarked, “Mark was a very honorable officer when he served here. Knowing Mark and learning of the recent events, it truly devastates us. It feels like a personal loss once more.”

Additionally, it was revealed that during his tenure in Philadelphia, Baker had served alongside Officer Pat McDonald, who was killed in the line of duty during a traffic stop in 2008. Maureen Rush, previously a lieutenant with the Philadelphia police, currently serves as the president of the Philadelphia Police Foundation.

“We need the community to understand the sacrifice these officers do, day in and day out, across the country,” Rush said.

So far, there has been no word on funeral arrangements or when they will be held.
