JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — During a commissioners meeting on Thursday, two officers from the Johnson City Police Department (JCPD) were honored with some of the department’s top distinctions.

At the meeting, Officer Mitch Peters and Officer Jonathon Workman received the following honors, according to a news release from the JCPD:

  • Officer Mitch Peters – Silver Cross
    • Presented to officers who, in the performance of official duty, sustain serious physical injuries as a result of hostile behavior by another using a deadly weapon or dangerous instrument
  • Officer Jonathon Workman – Medal of Distinguished Service
    • Awarded to personnel who, in the line of duty, perform an act of courage involving risk of serious personal injury for the purpose of saving or protecting human life

The awards stem from a shooting that occurred on March 12 when Peters was shot in both legs with a semi-automatic rifle.

“Officer Workman moved Officer Peters to the rear of the patrol car for protection and applied a tourniquet to Peters’ right leg to control the bleeding,” the JCPD stated in the announcement. “Workman then transported Peters over 200 feet to a secure area, notified emergency dispatchers, and directed arriving officers to the suspected location of the gunfire.”

Since the shooting, Officer Peters has had multiple surgeries and extensive physical therapy, the JCPD stated.

“Residents of Johnson City can take pride in knowing the JCPD is served by officers like Mitch Peters and Jonathon Workman,” Chief Billy Church expressed in the release. “We are proud to acknowledge their bravery, professionalism, and dedication to public safety.”
