JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. (WJHL) – Fender’s Farm reopened its doors on Saturday, marking nearly a year since Hurricane Helene caused severe flooding that devastated the venue.
Owner Carroll Fender said he didn’t picture a day he could reopen after what they experienced in the aftermath of Helene.
“In the initial weeks following the flood, I questioned if we could ever reopen,” Fender remarked. “However, we’ve been overwhelmed by the love from the community, with abundant donations and volunteers. It’s been truly incredible.”
Fender said it took a lot of work and even 12 to 16-hour shifts since last November to get the farm back to where it is today.
Keith Bailey, a long-time volunteer, explained that after Helene’s impact, the farm functioned as a FEMA response point and distributed about 300 meals daily through various groups. Bailey noted the farm is currently in its best condition ever.
“Thanks to prayers, faith, and belief, along with the dedication of volunteers and efforts from family and friends, the farm has bounced back. It’s probably in the best condition it’s been in years,” said Bailey. “We’ve introduced some new features behind the corn maze.”
The farm continues to offer favorite activities while introducing new attractions like a large sand pit, a piggy track, and a new playground for children.
Hailee Breuer, a long-time visitor, expressed excitement to return to Fender’s Farm with her family, eager to reunite with the animals, including her friend Tom the Turkey.
“It makes me so proud. How big of a comeback they’ve made,” said Breuner. “The storm really impacted them and everyone else as well. So it’s really just amazing what they’ve had, a comeback.”
