The Illinois Department of Agriculture is alerting residents about a troublesome invasive species that has made its way into the state and is requesting assistance from the public.

Originating from China, the spotted lanternfly has spread throughout the United States. Reports indicate it first appeared in Illinois in 2023 and continues to be present. According to the department, there has been an increase in sightings in Cook County, with the insect primarily targeting grapevines.

“We’re noticing these in places like residential backyards in Chicago,” explained Scott Schirmer, State Plant Regulatory Official. “These aren’t the typical settings for this type of intervention, like vineyards or orchards. Therefore, it’s not advisable to excessively use pesticides or any aggressive management strategies as they aren’t causing significant harm.”

Schirmer urges those who spot a lanternfly to report it via a dedicated email. To report a sighting, email lanternfly@illinois.edu, and be sure to attach a photo of the insect along with the location of the sighting.
