Savoy FD offering car seat checks during Illinois Child Passenger Safety Week

SAVOY, Ill. (WCIA) — It’s Illinois’ Child Passenger Safety Week, and one fire department in Central Illinois is taking action to keep kids safe.

The Savoy Fire Department has car seat safety technicians on staff who will be offering free car seat checks on Saturday.

Tim Worstell, a firefighter and car seat technician at Savoy Fire Department, mentioned that a frequent error they encounter is the car seat harness being too loose. He noted that each car seat and vehicle manufacturer has its own guidelines, which complicates ensuring that your seat is safe and current.

This Saturday, car seat technicians are set to check if car seats are expired, identify if there are any recalls on the seats or cars, and assist in the proper installation of the car seats.

“It’s crucial because you want to be certain that your child is safe. At times, you might believe it’s securely fastened, and that’s why we’re here—to ensure everything is correctly adjusted. A lot is involved, but fundamentally, it’s about the child’s safety, and we’re here to help and ensure that people receive the support they need,” Worstell stated.

If you are unable to make it on Saturday, the Savoy Fire Department said that you can make an appointment to have your car seats checked.
