Brisbane childcare tries to charge parents thousands for kids' artwork

A Brisbane kindergarten will return portfolios of children’s artwork to parents after a painting stand-off was resolved.

The director of Craigslea Kindergarten, Thomas D’Souza, reached out to families via email, requesting $2200 for end-of-year portfolios to assist in alleviating the centre’s increasing financial burden.

Parents were outraged by the request and asked the centre to return the artworks for free.

“The email explained that the committee had decided to attempt fundraising by offering the children’s artwork for sale,” she informed 9News earlier this week.

“It’s ridiculous, absolutely ridiculous.

“I don’t even really have words for it.

“At the beginning of the year, we had signed consent forms that stated the portfolios were our property and that parents have the right to manage their child’s sensitive information, including photos.”

The move has prompted C&K, the company affiliated with Craigslea Kindergarten, to step in and recover the portfolios.

In a statement to 9News today, a spokesperson confirmed the “documents are now available for families to collect free of charge”.

Additionally, the spokesperson mentioned that C&K would collaborate with all pertinent departments to ensure the kindergarten could reopen for term four, following its closure nearly three weeks ago.
