MSNBC's O'Leary: ICE Needs to Change Policies, Tactics or There'll Be More Violence

During Wednesday’s segment of MSNBC’s “Katy Tur Reports,” Security and Intelligence Analyst Christopher O’Leary commented on the shooting incident at an ICE facility in Texas. He expressed that while reducing heated language is necessary, it’s equally crucial to reevaluate and adjust existing policies and methods. If rhetoric is softened but current practices remain, no real change will occur.

O’Leary explained, “Terrorism serves as a form of theater, aimed at affecting more than its direct victims. It projects a message. Terrorism generally falls into three types: religiously driven, ideologically driven, or, as in this instance, politically driven. Politically motivated terrorism doesn’t occur in isolation. It arises from an environment that prompts individuals to react.”

He highlighted that these conditions include “a growing distrust in institutions over time, attacks on these bodies, widening economic divides, and perceived oppressive policies. Added to this is the militarization of ICE and other federal agencies, characterized by tactics like wearing masks and adopting an aggressive stance. Those acting out see it as their only option. This pattern is predictable, mirrored throughout our history and globally. Indeed, lowering the rhetoric is a positive step. However, it’s vital to scrutinize the policies and techniques in use, as without these changes, the situation will remain the same.”
