GRAND BLANC, Mich. — Multiple people have been shot at a Mormon church in Michigan and the shooter is down, police said Sunday.

The incident took place at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc, approximately 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of Detroit, as reported by local police on social media. The church was engulfed in flames.

Police said there is no ongoing threat to the public. Authorities have not released details on the victims’ conditions.

Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson said the area had been evacuated and local and federal authorities were there.

“The entire church is on fire,” Swanson said. “This is a dynamic scene.”

He said authorities would release more details later.

“There’s a lot of things that are happening that we are not able to communicate just because of the work that needs to be done,” Swanson said.

The church, surrounded by a parking lot and expansive lawn, is situated near residential neighborhoods and a Jehovah’s Witness church in Grand Blanc. This community, home to around 8,000 residents, is just outside Flint.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer expressed her sorrow for the Grand Blanc community, stating that her heart is heavy. “Violence in any form, especially within a sacred space, is inexcusable,” she remarked.

This shooting took place a day following the death of Russell M. Nelson, the oldest leader of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, who passed away at the age of 101. According to church protocol, Dallin H. Oaks is anticipated to become the next leader of the faith, commonly known as the Mormon church.

This is a developing story. Please check back for more information.
