The church, which is about 50 miles north of Detroit, appeared to be on fire after the attack.

WASHINGTON — Multiple people have been shot at a Mormon church in Michigan and the shooter is down, police said Sunday.

Local police reported on social media that a shooting took place at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc, approximately 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of Detroit. The church was also on fire.

Police said there is no ongoing threat to the public. Authorities have not released details on the victims’ conditions.

Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson said the area had been evacuated and local and federal authorities were there.

“The entire church is on fire,” Swanson said. “This is a dynamic scene.”

He said authorities would release more details later.

“There’s a lot of things that are happening that we are not able to communicate just because of the work that needs to be done,” Swanson said.

Situated near residential neighborhoods and a Jehovah’s Witness church, the church in Grand Blanc is encircled by a parking lot and large expanse of lawn. This area is home to about 8,000 residents and is located just outside Flint.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer expressed her sorrow for the Grand Blanc community in a statement. “Violence, particularly in a place of worship, is utterly unacceptable,” she stated.

The tragic event happened the morning after the passing of Russell M. Nelson, who was the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ oldest president at the age of 101. According to church protocol, Dallin H. Oaks is anticipated to be the next president of the faith, commonly known as the Mormon church.

More information will be added to this story as it becomes available.
