Police and a local news report indicate that a paroled felon with a history of violence has been arrested in connection with a fatal stabbing at a Caltrain platform.

The suspect, identified as Jose Gomez Bustamante, 31, was apprehended by the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office. On August 28, he was booked into the Maguire Correctional Facility on suspicion of murder. Authorities took him into custody around 11:30 a.m. after tracking him overnight.

The victim, a man from San Mateo, was taken to a nearby hospital with critical injuries and later died.

The coroner’s office has identified the victim as Joseph Michael Carreiro. Officials mentioned that the events leading to the stabbing were not immediately clear.

Bustamante is no stranger to violence. In 2020, he made an unprovoked attempt to stab a taqueria worker in Redwood City. He later admitted guilt to assault with a deadly weapon and received a six-year prison sentence in June 2023.

Nevertheless, as reported by RWC Pulse, Bustamante was released on parole this April, serving less than two years of his sentence due to earning credits for good behavior and participation in treatment programs. The outlet’s reviewed records also indicated a pattern of parole violations and previous offenses.
