SAVANNAH, Ga. () – Women’s professional basketball is one step closer to becoming a reality in the Hostess City.
Back in late January, Upshot League announced Savannah would be a founding member.
On Tuesday morning, the league held a press conference at Enmarket Arena to reveal the team name, logo and head coach.
The team is set to be named the Savannah Steel. Its logo takes the form of a shield in hot pink, with the city’s name emblazoned across the top. Below that, the team name appears prominently in capital letters.
The Savannah Steel, which are owned by Zawyer Sports and Entertainment, named Coretta Brown the head coach.
The former WNBA first-round draft pick has deep connections to Southeast Georgia, being from Statesboro. She is an alumna of Southeast Bulloch and has served as an assistant coach at Georgia Southern.
Building a team is among the primary tasks for any coach. Upshot Commissioner Donna Orender mentioned that the league plans to send out invitations and organize local tryouts, with the date to be announced soon. She also expressed hope that some local players would join the team.
Several details are still under discussion. Dates for the inaugural game of the season and the total games in the four-team league have not been decided yet. However, the commissioner did confirm that the season would culminate in a playoff.
