The Trump administration has featured banners on federal websites attributing the government shutdown to Democrats, with some banners evidently promoting President Donald Trump. For instance, a banner on the US Department of Agriculture’s site reads, “The Radical Left Democrats shut down the government,” and it further states that “President Trump has made it clear he wants to keep the government open and support those who feed, fuel, and clothe the American people.”
Other similar messages appear on various websites, such as the Department of the Treasury, where a banner accuses Democrats of shutting down the government “in the name of reckless spending and obstructionism.” The White House website also places blame on Democrats and has a timer indicating the duration of the shutdown thus far.
On Wednesday morning, the federal government shutdown occurred after Congress failed to agree on a funding bill, as Democrats persistently face resistance from Republicans on their efforts to extend subsidies for the Affordable Care Act. Republicans have pointed fingers at Democrats for the shutdown, with House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) asserting on X that the Democrats “voted” to close the government.
However, not all federal agencies display these messages, as sites like those of the Department of State, the Department of Education, and the Federal Communications Commission have banners that merely indicate that updates will not occur due to the government shutdown.
