The relatives of Thomas Jacob Sanford, responsible for a tragic shooting at a church in Michigan, are deeply appreciative of the immense kindness from the faith community their family member once targeted.

By Wednesday night, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ members had generously contributed over $225,000 for Sanford’s wife and their son, who suffers from a costly, rare genetic condition.

This fundraising initiative has gained global attention, with donors, primarily Latter-day Saints, supporting the family of a man who allegedly harbored deep animosity against their church, labeling them “the anti-Christ,” and recently committed acts of violence against them, including burning a chapel and taking four lives.

Katie Hamilton, Sanford’s sister, expressed to Fox News their family’s profound gratitude for the compassion shown by the Latter-day Saint community.

Another read, “You are loved. And this was not your fault. May you find healing, strength and peace.”

Another message from the Latter-day Saints emphasized the church’s prayers for “hope and healing” for those affected by the tragedy.

Donations ranged up to $5,000, Butler said, with the average gift at $40.

Although the fundraiser has been viewed positively overall, some individuals have expressed slight disapproval, questioning the support directed towards the shooter’s family rather than his victims. However, Butler clarified that the intention was never to favor one side.

“It’s wanting the Sanford family not to be left behind. I don’t believe those kids are guilty. And I think their father has made a decision that will make their lives very, very difficult,” Butler said. “They deserve help like any other innocent person does.”
