Former TV anchor charged with first-degree murder in stabbing death of 80-year-old mother: DA

A former Missouri TV news anchor has pleaded guilty in the deadly Halloween stabbing of her mother, a killing authorities say unfolded after she appeared to believe the 80-year-old woman was the devil.

Angelynn “Angie” Mock, 48, admitted to one count of first-degree murder in the death of her mother, Anita Avers, who was killed on Oct. 31, 2025, the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office said Friday.

As part of the plea agreement, Mock is expected to receive a life sentence, with the possibility of parole after serving 25 years.

Wichita police said officers were dispatched around 7:50 a.m. on Halloween to the home Mock shared with Avers and Mock’s stepfather. When authorities arrived, they found Mock outside the residence with injuries to her hands.

Avers, who had suffered multiple stab wounds, was rushed to a hospital, where she later died.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Mock made statements suggesting she believed her mother was the devil. Investigators said she allegedly claimed she killed Avers in an effort to “save herself.”

Mock’s stepfather told KAKE-TV that she had previously been diagnosed with mental illness and had struggled with delusions and depression.
