Apple sidelines lighter Vision Pro to prioritize smart glasses

Apple is accelerating its efforts on developing smart glasses to compete with similar products from Meta and has paused its plans for a lighter Vision Pro headset, reports Bloomberg. The company is reportedly working on at least two variations: a pair without a display that may be unveiled next year and released in 2027, and a display-equipped pair initially slated for 2028, which Apple now aims to speed up development on.

Apple’s glasses, akin to Meta’s smart offerings in collaboration with Ray-Ban and Oakley, will feature speakers, cameras, multiple styles, and will heavily utilize voice interaction and artificial intelligence, according to Bloomberg. The glasses version with a display “could challenge” Meta’s Ray-Ban Display glasses, which incorporate a display in the right lens. Additionally, Apple is developing a custom chip for its smart glasses, as previously reported by Bloomberg.

Regarding the lighter Vision Pro headset, it was initially rumored for a 2027 release, but Apple has redirected resources from this project to focus on the glasses. The company has reportedly reduced the production of the original Vision Pro. However, recent regulatory filings have indicated that a new iteration is in development, which Bloomberg described as a “modest refresh” that could debut “as early as the end of this year.”
