(NewsNation) — U.S. citizens looking to get or renew a passport amid the government shutdown can rest easy, since passport applications are expected to continue processing.

The government shut down Wednesday after lawmakers failed to pass a funding bill, but that should not significantly impact passport operations.

The State Department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs/Passport Services, which is in charge of issuing passports, is considered an essential service and operates on passport fees, ensuring all passport services should stay open during the shutdown.

Per the State Department’s shutdown contingency plans, “consular operations domestically and abroad will remain 100% operational as long as there are sufficient fees to support operations.”

However, the shutdown might affect processing times, so travelers should allow extra time before any trips. It’s advisable to check current processing times on the State Department’s website.

Will USPS passport appointments be affected by shutdown?

Passport appointments with the U.S. Postal Service won’t be disrupted by the shutdown, since it’s independently funded through its product sales.

The Postal Service is crucial to passport application processes, as it handles applications at specified facilities, ensures their accuracy, and submits them to the State Department.
