The 25-year-old man is now in the hospital, recovering after the daring rescue.Â
The accident happened when his Toyota veered off Salisbury Highway, travelling about 50 meters into the wetlands and catching fire upon impact.
Prior to emergency services’ arrival, two truck drivers, John and Rylie, had already entered the water to assist the driver.Â
“Noticed the bloke, he was sort of half out of the car, so we just sort of jumped through the water, grabbed him out,” John said.
John then discovered the victim was not breathing and began resuscitating him, as Rylie flagged down arriving paramedics.
“I only found out a few hours later if he actually survived or not, and that was a major concern for us—we just wanted to ensure he made it,” John said.
The humble hero says helping people is “just what you do” and would be happy with a simple “thank-you”.
“He can buy us a beer or something,” John said.
“Yeah, I’ll take a beer.”Â
