JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — The Johnson City Commission will consider Mayor John Hunter’s resignation on Thursday.

Commissioners are set to decide on accepting Hunter’s resignation letter, which he submitted on Monday following the circulation of a video appearing to show him stumbling in downtown Johnson City on social media.

The city announced in a news release Monday that if Hunter’s resignation is accepted, Vice Mayor Greg Cox would become the city’s mayor.

If Hunter’s resignation is approved, the Johnson City Commission will be responsible for appointing someone to fill his vacant seat.

If someone is appointed to fill that position, they would remain in the role until the next general election.

The commission is scheduled to hold a work session at 3 p.m. on Thursday to discuss the issues at hand. However, no official decisions will be made during this session. The formal commission meeting will start at 6 p.m., during which any decisions regarding Hunter’s resignation will be finalized.

Hunter was not present for the work session.
