An Indiana father has been convicted in connection with his daughter’s death, who passed away last year due to complications with diabetes.

On Thursday, a jury in Vanderburgh County found Brent Bredhold, 39, guilty of neglect of a dependent resulting in death, following the passing of his 12-year-old daughter, Alice Bredhold, on July 4, 2024.

According to affidavits for the arrests, Evansville Police arrived at the family home and found Alice dead on the floor in her bedroom.

An autopsy revealed she died from diabetic ketoacidosis.

The prosecution said Bredhold “was given every opportunity” to help Alice, but despite medical advice, failed to properly care for her.

The involvement of the Department of Children’s Services began when it was discovered that Alice consistently had extremely high blood sugar levels whenever her school conducted tests.

Two other children were removed from the home, which was filled with trash and insects, the affidavits stated.

“This is a heartbreaking case where a 12-year-old girl with Type 1 diabetes was left to fend for herself until her untimely death,” stated Vanderburgh County Chief Deputy Prosecutor Winston Lin, as reported by News Channel 8.

“Her parents should have been her strongest advocates to keep her healthy and alive, but sadly, they offered nothing but apathy, indifference, and neglect.”

“Among the hundreds of children under 18 with Type 1 diabetes seen by her pediatric endocrinologist, she was the only one to die directly due to her condition.”

“The true heroes in this case are the medical professionals and school staff who provided warmth, care, and moments of respite in Alice’s daily life. Thanks to them, Alice knew that some people fought for her well-being.”

The jury reached the verdict in a little under two hours. Sentencing is scheduled for October 23.

Alice’s mother, Ashley Bredhold, is facing two counts of the same charges. Her trial is scheduled for February 17.
