Live updates: Senate to vote on bills to end shutdown; Tensions rise over Trump troop deployments

Two significant developments are causing a stir in Washington as the Senate readies itself for votes later today on bringing the government shutdown to an end, and a federal judge on Sunday night temporarily halted President Trump’s initiative to deploy National Guard troops to Oregon.

This ruling, the second in two days, came after Oregon’s leaders vowed to resist the deployment of troops to address what Trump refers to as a city “under siege.”

Additionally, Texas National Guard members have been cleared to proceed to Oregon and Illinois, a development reported on Sunday night by Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker (D). On Sunday evening, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott instructed Pritzker to ensure the safety of federal personnel or “step aside,” as Abbott confirmed this authorization. Pritzker labeled the mobilization as an “invasion.”

In Washington, Trump has no public events, but there is a White House press briefing scheduled.

In the government shutdown’s sixth day, the Senate is expected to vote on two funding bills that could reopen operations, but that is not expected.
