TILTON, Ill. (WCIA) — For over four decades, the International Lineman’s Rodeo has attracted some of the best utility professionals from around the globe for conferences, exhibitions, and a competitive rodeo. Ameren Illinois is sending six apprentices to this event, with three of them being from Central Illinois.

The three apprentices faced off against other Illinois utility workers to attend the rodeo.

Apprentice lineman Devin Richards said he’s looking forward to a couple of things at the expo.

“I’m thrilled to meet everyone there. We’ll have more than 400 apprentices with us. There’s even a moment when we all swap shirts and get to meet new folks,” Richards expressed.

The event is more than just networking. It features five competitions, including a general knowledge exam, a rescue operation, two surprise challenges, and a speed climbing contest.

Apprentice lineman Jakob Weder said the speed climbing competition is not an easy task.

“You have to climb up as quickly as possible, toss a bag to the ground, and retrieve an egg from the bag,” Weder described. “Then, you put the egg in your mouth and descend rapidly without breaking it.”

Weder said he has definitely cracked an egg while performing the stunt.

“I’ve cracked a few. I don’t know how many, but probably three or four. I try not to crack them,” Weder said.

The International Lineman’s Rodeo will be held Oct. 15 through Oct. 18 in Overland, Kansas.
