Authorities from both federal and local levels in California revealed an arrest related to the criminal investigation of a fire that devastated the Pacific Palisades area in Los Angeles.
Jonathan Rinderknecht, aged 29, was detained on Tuesday at his residence in Melbourne, Florida, and faces charges of property destruction via fire. Officials noted that Rinderknecht, who once lived in the Pacific Palisades, had a good knowledge of the locality.
A criminal complaint alleges that he started the fire on New Years Day.
According to Acting U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli, among the evidence against Rinderknecht was an AI-generated illustration from ChatGPT portraying a city in flames.
The fire ignited on January 7, eventually expanding beyond 20,000 acres, claiming 12 lives, obliterating 7,000 structures, and resulting in insured losses estimated between $18-20 billion. Investigators concluded the wildfire was initiated deliberately.
Authorities did not provide a motive for why he allegedly started that fire.
Rinderknecht’s initial court appearance is set for Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. ET in Orlando.
