ABINGDON, Va. (WJHL) — On Wednesday, Pepsi and Food City introduced a new “Mountain Dew” vehicle, drawing inspiration from NASCAR icon Darrell Waltrip’s 1981 Buick Regal.
The car will travel to Food City locations and other events, offering opportunities for people to take pictures and enjoy free Mountain Dew samples.
This particular Buick is painted in tribute to Waltrip’s participation in the NASCAR championship of 1981. The car dons a Mountain Dew “Number 48” design to commemorate the year the beverage was first crafted in Johnson City.
“We’ll be offering product samples at our stores, distributing coupons, and featuring fantastic deals on Mountain Dew,” explained Ross Purdy, Food City’s Vice President of Merchandising. “Moreover, one fortunate customer will have the chance to win $25,000, presented to them just in time for Christmas. It’s straightforward; every purchase of Mountain Dew with your value card automatically registers you for a chance to win.”
Pepsico Beverages Key Account Manager Jason Smith said community members can keep an eye out for future events that will host the car.
“In 1981, Darrell Waltrip clinched the NASCAR national championship with his 1981 Buick. We have recreated that car, ensuring it carries the number 48, to celebrate the year Mountain Dew originated,” he noted. “This vehicle will serve as a marketing platform for collaborative initiatives between Mountain Dew and Food City, including grand openings, community gatherings, and similar events.”
The car also has a 400-hp Chevy engine and a trunk stocked full of Mountain Dew.
