Two Pennsylvania state troopers pursuing a suspect Wednesday night were wounded in a firefight, which also left the suspect dead, authorities said.
The troopers were attending to a reported theft incident at a Dick’s Sporting Goods near Chambersburg when the situation escalated shortly after 6 p.m., as stated by Pennsylvania State Police in a release.
When troopers arrived on the scene, the suspects were fleeing in a van with Maryland plates and traveling toward nearby Interstate 81.
The troopers initiated a chase, which concluded when the suspect vehicle hit spike strips positioned over 10 miles away near Greencastle, according to police. At that moment, two women followed orders to exit the car and were taken into custody without any further complications.
However, a third suspect, a male, began firing at the troopers, hitting two of them, authorities reported. The officers returned fire, fatally injuring the shooter. He was identified through a court affidavit as 31-year-old Lamar Lorenzo Foy.
The injured troopers were quickly transported to Wellspan York Hospital, where one remained in serious condition on Thursday, according to police. The other officer received treatment and was released on Thursday morning. Their identities have not been disclosed.
The two women found in the van — named as Amir Loren Swift and Giani Jaida McGowan, both 21 and from Baltimore — face charges related to retail theft and drug offenses.
Charging documents allege they stole clothing valued at over $1,000 from Dick’s. Additionally, a search of the van revealed THC, plastic bags containing powder, cash, and scales, investigators noted.
Both women, who were denied bail, are being held at the Franklin County Jail, a supervisor said.
An investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
