Around 1,200 residents in Central Illinois will need to boil their water until Sunday night after a water main was repaired near Champaign.

Tuscola city representatives announced on Facebook that a water main leak occurred in Champaign County at the main that supplies water to the city. This led to a request for residents to conserve water. The leak, connected to a sinkhole in Champaign, has been repaired, and Tuscola citizens are no longer asked to conserve water, but a boil order remains in place.

On Saturday morning, the Arcola Fire Protection District informed on Facebook that the areas of Arcola, Tuscola, Sadorus, Embarras, and Pesotum are subject to a boil order due to the main repairs. This order will last until 10 p.m. on Sunday.

According to Jeff Mercer, West Prairie Water Company’s Operator, about 1,200 individuals in rural Douglas, Moultrie, Piatt, and Coles Counties are impacted by this boil order.

Tuscola City Treasurer Alta L. Long stated in an announcement on Saturday morning that Illinois American has finished the repair work, meaning Tuscola can resume its usual water intake, with the supply now considered “plentiful” again.

Before using water for cooking and drinking, residents should boil it for five minutes. The water is deemed safe for bathing, washing, and other everyday uses.
