BROADVIEW, Ill. () At least 15 individuals were detained on Saturday near the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility close to Chicago, amid increasing demonstrations opposing the Trump administration’s “Operation Midway Blitz.”

The detentions happened at a federal immigration processing site in Broadview, Illinois, a suburb. As stated by the Cook County Sheriff’s Office, all arrested individuals were younger than 40 and are facing charges from damaging government property to not complying with police directives.

These protests emerged after a decision by a federal appeals court on Saturday, which partially reinstated President Trump’s authority over the National Guard within Chicago and Illinois, but impeded him from deploying military personnel in the state.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit approved the Trump administration’s request for a partial administrative stay, permitting the president to federalize the National Guard in Illinois. Nonetheless, the court rejected the administration’s attempt to deploy the National Guard. According to the order, troops do not have to return to their states unless further directed by the court.

U.S. District Judge April Perry, appointed by former President Biden, had earlier stopped the administration’s use of the National Guard on Thursday. Illinois and Chicago authorities, including Gov. JB Pritzker (D), filed a lawsuit on Monday citing what Pritzker described as “an unconstitutional invasion of Illinois by the federal government.”
