Mark Sanchez, a former Jets quarterback, was discharged from the hospital on Sunday and immediately taken to jail, where he faced felony battery and other charges before being released, according to police sources.

Now a 38-year-old sports analyst, Sanchez had previously been detained while in the hospital recovering from stab wounds. Surveillance video captured him intoxicated and confronting truck driver Perry Tole in an alley on October 4. Tole, 69, defended himself after pepper spray failed, fearing that Sanchez was “trying to kill me.”

Tole, engaged in collecting used oil from restaurants for recycling, had parked his truck in an alleyway loading dock between two hotels in Indianapolis. Sanchez began harassing him about his parking and attempted repeatedly to enter the truck, blocking and knocking Tole down, who reported that Sanchez smelled of alcohol.

In Indianapolis to commentate on the Colts versus Raiders game, Sanchez was videoed stumbling around for 20 minutes before the incident occurred.

Sanchez initially faced charges of battery causing injury, public intoxication, and unlawful vehicle entry—all misdemeanors. As further evidence emerged, a felony charge for battery causing serious bodily harm was added, citing Tole’s injuries as “significant and very severe,” which carries a potential six-year prison sentence.

Tole has filed a lawsuit against Sanchez and Fox Sports, accusing the former athlete of assault/battery and the network of negligent hiring practices. Tole’s attorneys report that he suffered a disfiguring cheek injury and is unable to attend his son’s wedding, even though he has left the hospital.
