A 43-year-old school occupational therapist has been charged with attempted murder for allegedly attempting to poison her ex-husband.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has charged Cheryl Harris Gates with attempted murder, food or drink contamination, stalking, and property damage. While they did not provide further information, court documents offer more insight into the charges.
As reported by WSOC, Gates allegedly tampered with her ex-husband’s energy drink by adding prescription medication on July 8. The ex-husband noted that the drink had an unusual taste when he took a sip.
Gates’ attorney told the station he is still working on getting up to speed on the case and urged an open mind.
According to WCNC, Gates is a pediatric occupational therapist, assisting students with sensory processing issues, handwriting problems, and executive function disorders.
Police said the incident did not take place on a school campus and did not involve students or other staff.
