Just days after the unexpected passing of iconic actress Diane Keaton at 79, her family has officially disclosed the cause of her death.

In a heartfelt statement shared with People on Wednesday, the family expressed deep gratitude for the outpouring of love and support during this difficult time. They confirmed that Diane succumbed to pneumonia on October 11.

According to TMZ, the Oscar-winning actress was declared deceased at a hospital following a call to emergency services. Paramedics from the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to her home just after 8 a.m. on Saturday upon receiving reports of a “person down,” as captured in 911 audio.

Later that day, a family representative officially confirmed her death but chose not to provide additional details at that moment.

As reported by People, an insider revealed that Keaton’s health deteriorated rapidly, leaving many close to her stunned by the sudden loss.

Although friends noticed she had been losing a notable amount of weight in her final weeks, even those closest to her weren’t fully aware of the severity of her condition, the source added.

Keaton reportedly died surrounded only by her closest family members, including her two kids — daughter Dexter and son Duke, whom she adopted in 1996 and 2001, respectively.

Her family, citing Keaton’s longtime love of animals and support for the unhoused community, has asked that anyone who wishes to pay tribute the screen icon do so by donating to a local animal shelter or food bank.
