The U.S. State Department has confirmed it is actively monitoring reports of an incident involving two American tourists in a well-known European seaside locale. According to local authorities and media, this attack resulted in one fatality and left another individual injured.

The incident reportedly took place early Wednesday in Cascais, a scenic resort town situated roughly 20 miles west of Portugal’s capital, Lisbon.

Footage captured by Reuters depicted bloodstains on a sidewalk, marking the scene of a stabbing that occurred during what has been described as an attempted robbery.

A spokesperson from the State Department informed Fox News Digital that the agency is committed to safeguarding U.S. citizens overseas and is prepared to offer necessary consular support.

The Lisbon Metropolitan Command police informed the Portugal Resident newspaper that the attack left one young man deceased at the scene, while the other sustained injuries to his face and arms and was subsequently transported to a hospital for treatment.

“One of the young men died at the scene and the other suffered injuries to his face and arms and was taken to [a] hospital,” the Portugal Resident newspaper cited the Lisbon Metropolitan Command police force as saying.

The attack was carried out by three suspects who fled the scene in a vehicle, the newspaper added.
