Introducing Daxbot: Austin's Innovative Three-Foot Surveillance Robot Enhancing Neighborhood Safety

In the heart of Austin, a new kind of sentinel is keeping watch over select areas. These are the Daxbot robots, standing at a modest three feet tall, and they have become a part of Austin’s security landscape over the past year.

Deployed through a partnership between CTX Patrol Services and the robotics company Daxbot, these surveillance robots were introduced to bolster security measures throughout the city. Michael Fallon, CEO of CTX Patrol Services, explained their purpose: “They’re designed to deter mischief. When people see them, they tend to think twice about their actions. However, they’re not just there to intimidate—they’re meant to de-escalate situations and provide a friendly presence that helps things run more smoothly.”

Mason Reeves, a security sales lead at Daxbot, provided further insight into the operation of these robots. He described them as “semi-autonomous,” capable of performing tasks independently while being under constant supervision from their control center. “We monitor the robots closely and can take manual control whenever necessary. Our control center features a large screen divided into a grid of nine to twelve smaller screens. When a robot detects a person or a situation requiring attention, the relevant screen will illuminate, alerting us to the need for further observation,” Reeves elaborated.

“They’re semi-autonomous, they are oftentimes going on their own—doing tasks on their own— but while we’re watching over them or even taking manual control over them, we have a direct line of video,” Reves said. “There’s a grid of nine or 12 screens on one larger screen [at the control center], and anytime the robot detects a person or an instance that needs to be looked at, the screen lights up.”

Fallon said there have been a couple instances in Austin already where the robot has alerted authorities on a safety risk or fire.

“If you’re in a situation and there’s a weapon or a firearm or something, your first reaction is to get out of there and not stay there—and that’s what I would want for you,” Fallon said. “The operator who’s viewing all this is a thousand miles away so they can react and they can respond as well in a non-emotional, a non-energetic way.”

According to Daxbot’s website, the robot can patrol for eight to 10 hours at a charge and has a cruising speed of 3.7 miles per hour.
