In a heated meeting on Thursday evening, the Palm Bay City Council took decisive steps to censure one of their own members, Councilman Chandler Langevin, due to inflammatory social media posts concerning Indian individuals. Despite Langevin’s threats to sue the city, the council opted to proceed with the censure, a decision that reflects the gravity of the situation.

Langevin sparked outrage with a post on X.com, where he claimed that Indians do not care about the United States and are merely here to exploit the country for financial gain, enriching India and themselves. The post concluded with the contentious statement, “America for Americans,” which has since fueled significant backlash within the community.

In response to the uproar, both the mayor and fellow council members have made efforts to address and soothe the concerns of Palm Bay’s residents. Despite the conciliatory gestures from his colleagues, Langevin initially defended his comments but later issued an apology, specifically for the tone of his statements.

Amid this controversy, the city council took further action two weeks ago by voting to request the intervention of Governor Ron DeSantis to remove Langevin from his position. This move underscores the council’s commitment to maintaining a respectful and inclusive environment in Palm Bay, even as tensions remain high.

However, Langevin stood by his words, though he would eventually issue a statement apologizing for his tone.

Two weeks ago, the council voted to ask Gov. Ron DeSantis to remove Langevin.

On Thursday night, after public comment and debate, the council voted 3 to 2 to censure Langevin.

The censure means Langevin will not be able to add items to agendas, and can be barred from other boards or committees in the city.

Langevin has promised to sue over the decision, calling the censure illegal.
