While acknowledging the tradition’s significance to the fanbase, Hocutt stressed the necessity of this decision to safeguard the team’s performance on the field.

This announcement follows a series of events that began in the offseason when the Big 12 introduced a regulation aimed at stopping objects from being thrown onto the field. Interestingly, the rule initially included an exception for Texas Tech’s well-known tradition, permitting fans to throw tortillas at kickoff. The regulation passed with a 15 to 1 vote, with Texas Tech voicing the sole opposition. This led to the program embracing the ’15-1′ slogan, which Hocutt had championed earlier in the year.
