Texas Tech says tortilla throwing is no longer allowed

In Lubbock, Texas, Kirby Hocutt, the Director of Athletics at Texas Tech, declared on Monday that fans will no longer be permitted to toss tortillas during the kickoff at home football games. While acknowledging the tradition’s significance to the fanbase, Hocutt stressed the necessity of this decision to safeguard the team’s performance on the field.

This announcement follows a series of events that began in the offseason when the Big 12 introduced a regulation aimed at stopping objects from being thrown onto the field. Interestingly, the rule initially included an exception for Texas Tech’s well-known tradition, permitting fans to throw tortillas at kickoff. The regulation passed with a 15 to 1 vote, with Texas Tech voicing the sole opposition. This led to the program embracing the ’15-1′ slogan, which Hocutt had championed earlier in the year.
